5 декабря 1945 года Звено 19, состоящее из пяти бомбардировщиков-торпедоносцев получило учебное задание вылететь с авиабазы военно-морских сил в Форт-Лодердейле, штат Флорида на восток, произвести сброс бомб недалеко от острова Бимини, затем пролететь какое-то расстояние на север и вернуться обратно. Расчетное время выполнения задания составляло около двух часов. В 14 часов 10 минут звено поднялось в воздух. Район бомбометания находился в 90 километрах восточней авиабазы, самолеты успешно его достигли и произвели сброс бомб. Затем командование немного изменило задание. Звену приказали пролететь еще около 100 километров на восток, потом повернуть на север и пролететь 120 километров, затем развернуться и возвращаться на базу - это еще около 220 километров. Всего в этом учебном полете, учитывая поправки к первоначальному заданию, летчикам нужно было пройти чуть более 500 километров.
На базе уже ожидали возвращения самолетов, когда в 16 часов 00 минут был перехвачен разговор командира Звена 19 с пилотом другого самолета. Из их переговоров было понятно, что самолеты потеряли ориентировку. Позже командир звена связался с базой и сообщил, что положение «Эвенджеров» аварийное. На всех бомбардировщиках вышли из строя оба компаса и часы, в результате чего пилоты потеряли ориентацию и, соответственно, не могут найти направление к базе. Нужно сказать, что «Эвенджеры» были неплохо оборудованы для своего времени. Для ориентировки в пространстве они имели «на борту» два компаса. Один - известный всем магнитный, а второй – радиокомпас, постоянно указывающий местоположение базы. Заблудиться с таким оборудованием, находясь недалеко от континента, было очень сложно. С авиабазы дали команду держаться на запад, что было совсем не трудно сделать, ориентируясь по Солнцу. Ответ пилотов привел командование в замешательство – «мы не в состоянии определить, где находится запад», более того, командиру звена приписывают также сообщение о том, что «океан выглядит необычно». Дальнейшие попытки давать указания звену с базы не увенчались успехом из-за помех от радиостанций Кубы и атмосферных явлений. Оставалось надеяться, что пилоты все-таки найдут дорогу домой самостоятельно. В 16 часов 45 минут командиру звена удалось вновь связаться с базой. Он сообщил, что они находятся над Мексиканским заливом. Это было невозможно, ведь указанное место находилось в совершенно противоположной стороне горизонта. База приказала командиру звена передать управление другому пилоту, но тот отказался это сделать. В 17 часов 00 минут стало окончательно ясно, что звено не сможет самостоятельно найти дорогу обратно. Пилоты были на грани нервного срыва, кто-то из них прокричал: «Черт побери, если бы мы летели на запад, то попали бы домой!». В 17 часов 22 минуты командир звена объявил: «Когда у кого-нибудь останется 10 галлонов горючего, мы приводнимся!». В 17 часов 50 минут на берегу засекли слабый сигнал самолетов звена. Они находились к востоку от Нью-Смирна-Бич, штат Флорида и продолжали лететь в северо-восточном направлении, то есть все больше удалялись от материка. Но передать эту информацию самолетам не смогли из-за сильных помех в радиосвязи. Между тем, уже сильно стемнело. В 18 часов 02 минуты на земле услышали фразу: «...В любую минуту может утонуть...», это могло означать, что самолеты совершили посадку на воду.
Командование авиабазы приступило к поисково-спасательной операции. В воздух поднялись два поисковых самолета «Мартин Маринер». Самолеты этого типа могли совершать посадку на воду, летать в любую погоду и находиться в воздухе целые сутки. К поиску были также привлечены все находившиеся в районе предполагаемого приводнения Звена 19 суда. Здесь произошла еще одна пропажа. На этот раз с одним из поисковых самолетов «Мартин Маринер», который так и не вернулся на базу, правда на одном из судов видели взрыв в воздухе, возможно на самолете произошла утечка топлива, что привело к катастрофе, не даром пилоты называли «Мартин Маринер» «летающим бензобаком». Никаких следов «Эвенджеров» поисковая экспедиция не нашла. Спустя пять суток, 10 декабря поиски были прекращены.
Бермудский треугольник
Однако ВМС США не находят в случившемся со Звеном 19 ничего мистического. Во-первых, только командир звена лейтенант Тейлор мог считаться опытным пилотом, остальные были просто курсантами, налетавшими к тому времени не более 400 часов, из них на «Эвенджерах» всего 55 часов, для сравнения – их командир налетал около 2500 часов. Правда, сам Тейлор совсем недавно был прикомандирован к авиабазе в Форт-Лодердейле, то есть район учений был для него довольно новым, кстати, перед самым вылетом он просил его заменить, так как неважно себя чувствовал, но командование отказало. Примечательно, что Тейлор был не единственным, кто не хотел лететь на это задание. Стрелок одного из «Эвенджеров» тоже почувствовал что-то неладное и самовольно устранился от полета. Во-вторых, погодные условия для выполнения задания оцениваются как средние – низкая облачность, видимость около десяти миль, а в местах ливневых дождей всего шесть миль. Отмечается, что море в тот день было неспокойным. Еще одно важное обстоятельство. Район «Бермудского треугольника» является одним из двух мест на Земле, где стрелка магнитного компаса указывает не на магнитный Северный Полюс, а на географический. Это называется склонение магнитного компаса. Второе такое место находится недалеко от побережья Японии. Безусловно, этот факт известен даже новичкам в летном деле, но если предположить, что пилоты в какой-то момент полета забыли про склонение, курс самолетов мог отклониться значительно.
С другой стороны, в этой истории остается много непонятного. Во-первых, выглядит довольно
странным то, что летчики заблудились, даже с учетом ограничения видимости и проблем с приборами. Трудно представить, по каким причинам профессиональным пилотам, владеющим техникой ориентирования на местности, не удалось определиться с курсом на протяжении целых двух часов. Во-вторых, факт отказа компасов, работающих на совершенно разных принципах, причем на всех самолетах сразу наталкивает на мысль о том, что Звено 19 столкнулось с чем-то очень необычным. В-третьих, как уже говорилось, судя по всему в 18 часов «Эвенджеры» сели на воду. Но все дело в том, что топлива у них должно было хватить до 20 часов. То есть еще целых два часа они могли искать землю. Чем можно объяснить решение о посадке в океан? Некоторые исследователи считают, что к 18 часам на «Эвенджерах» топливо действительно закончилось. Это могло произойти в том случае, если самолеты попали во временную аномалию, в которой ускорился нормальный ход времени. В этом случае Звено 19 могло просто перелететь полуостров Флориды и оказаться намного западнее, чем их ожидали. И, наконец, последнее. Есть свидетельство некоего радиолюбителя, который утверждает, что 5 декабря 1945 года он случайно перехватил радиообмен между пилотами Звена 19. Последнее, что он слышал было: «Не следуйте за мной... Они выглядят, как выходцы из Вселенной...». Проверить достоверность этого сообщения не представляется возможным.
Пропали бесследно?

В 1991 году поисковое судно «Дип Си» в 20 километрах северо-восточнее Форт-Лодердейла обнаружило четыре «Эвенджера», лежавших строем на глубине 250 метров. Через какое-то время, в двух километрах от четверки нашли еще один «Эвенджер». Дальнейшее исследование находок показало, что самолеты совершали посадку на воду - у них были загнуты лопасти пропеллеров и открыты фонари кабин. Бортовые номера были следующими - «FT-241», «FT-87» и у двух самолетов удалось разглядеть только цифры – «120» и «28», на пятом борту прочесть номер не удалось. Буквенное обозначение «FT» указывало, что самолеты принадлежали базе Форт-Лодердейл. Военные подняли архивы. Оказалось, что за всю историю в Атлантический океан упало 139 самолетов типа «Эвенджер», причем, группа из пяти самолетов пропадала только однажды - 5 декабря 1945 года. Но у пропавшего звена обозначения были такими: «FT-3», «FT-28» - самолет командира, «FT-36», «FT-81», «FT-117». Сошелся номер только одного самолета, правда, без буквенного обозначения. Интересно, что бортовые номера найденных самолетов среди пропавших не числились. Но что же тогда за самолеты находятся практически возле самой базы Форт-Лодердейл? В 1996 году военные официально объявили, что это макеты, специально помещенные под воду для отработки бомбометания с воздуха. Здесь возникают вопросы. Дело в том, что у макетов обычно отсутствуют пропеллеры, двигатели, другое оборудование и приборы. Кроме того, дно океана на глубине 250 метров не просматривается с воздуха, тогда как же проводились учения?
За и против
Случай с «Эвенджерами» является, пожалуй, единственным, который нельзя однозначно объяснить «естественными» причинами. Какие гипотезы выдвигают приверженцы «Бермудского треугольника»? Есть теория о том, что на дне «Бермудского треугольника» находится мощный инопланетный передатчик, время от времени посылающий сигналы в Космос. Поскольку он работает не постоянно, долгое время ничего не происходит, но стоит ему заработать, как его мощное излучение выводит приборы судов и самолетов из строя и даже разрушает сами самолеты и суда. Еще одна теория – на дне «Бермудского треугольника» находится база пришельцев. Время от времени они забирают суда и самолеты вместе с находящимися на них людьми для известных только им целей. Есть теории о магнитных аномалиях, искривляющих пространство и ход времени, теории о подводных вулканах и землетрясениях, и множество других.
С другой стороны, район «Бермудского треугольника» считается довольно сложным для судоходства. Это связано с разнообразным рельефом, непредсказуемым порой течением Гольфстрим и капризной погодой в этом районе.
Так или иначе, 17 ноября 2005 года Конгресс США почтил память 14 пилотов Звена 19, пропавших без вести в зоне «Бермудского треугольника». Общественности было обещано, что расследование будет доведено до конца...
